Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four

Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition

Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition
Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition
January 2017 will see the release of Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition, collecting multiple complete stories, all captured directly from Jack Kirby’s original art. This will be the second Artist’s Edition of Kirby’s immensely popular and influential Marvel work, following the recent release of the highly anticipated Jack Kirby’s The Mighty Thor Artist’s Edition.

“These issues of Fantastic Four represent Jack Kirby operating at the top of his game, which is about as high a compliment as I can pay a comic book,” said noted comics historian and Kirby biographer Mark Evanier. “As a reader, I felt like the fifth member of the Fantastic Four—and that was in the small format with the bad printing. When I get the IDW book, I will probably want to move into it and live there.”

Kirby’s work on the Fantastic Four, with his long-time collaborator Stan Lee, is considered to be some of the finest comics ever done. Adding to the prestige, legendary inker Joe Sinnott embellished all the pages in this book. This breathtaking volume will include Issues #82 and #83 (guest-starring the Inhumans), and the 48-page epic from Fantastic Four Annual #6, featuring the birth of Franklin Richards, plus more!

“Kirby’s inventive story-telling set the bar that Marvel has honored for decades,” says David Gabriel, SVP Sales & Marketing, Marvel Comics. “We couldn’t be prouder to see this fantastic work made available in this new prestige over-sized format that pays tribute to Jack ‘The King’ Kirby’s exemplary talent and skill.”

“What better way is there to kick off Jack Kirby’s centennial birthday year than by releasing our first Kirby Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition?” said editor (and life-long Kirby fan) Scott Dunbier. “And did you catch how I said first?”

People are Just Mad. What do you think their answer to this important question was?

Iron Man Image from wikia.com
Iron Man Image from wikia.com
Earlier this year we ran a survey on another site I run PopCultureBox. Among other questions about buying habits, age ranges, magazines subscribed to we decided to put in one of the most important questions in geekdom.

Who would win in a fist fight between Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne?

A simple question with a very obvious answer. But the answer actually tells more about the nature of surveys and their influences.

The real answer is obvious. It is of course Bruce Wayne. Although Tony is physically fit he is not a patch on the Dark Knight and his martial arts training and fitness regime. If the question was who would win in a fight between Batman and Iron Man, Iron Man is the obvious answer as quite simply, cybernetics, rockets and repulsor rays beat a metal boomerang and a black cape.

The results from the survey. Out of a total of 283 respondents 148 pumped for Tony. That is over 52%. Quite simply this is stunning as I would expect any group of comic book fans to back up my own opinion on the subject.

My belief is that the survey results comedown to one factor, character popularity. After 3 Iron Man films and the huge Avengers, Tony is by far a much more popular character than The Dark Knight himself. Maybe it goes further. Maybe people are thinking Robert Downey Junior vs Christian Bale.

Despite the fact that the Batman portrait by Bale is actually an amazing piece of cinema, Marvel is beating DC in the comic book movies race hands down at the moment. Should the question have been asked at a different time the results might have been starkly different.

What are your thoughts on this?

Weekend Scifi TV

Scifind Weekend TV
Scifind Weekend TV
Hello sci fiends!, sorry sci friends. Or, take which ever you wish. Another weekend is upon us, and though a sparse selection, there is indeed free to air tv for us to watch, companionably or sat with a big thick blanket to throw over our collective heads when the scary bits come along. Something like that anyway!

Friday has become SuperHero day. 8pm on Channel 4, sees episode 3 of Marvel’s Agents of Shield. Will it continue to live up to the rollicking pace of earlier episodes? Or have you already fallen by the way side. This household remains split, but I’m probably going to hold out for Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) on Film4 at 9pm, or The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) on ITV2 at 10pm

Saturday is rather light for Fantasy and Scifi – but does at least have The Adjustment Bureau (2011) at 9pm on Channel 4. Its the terrestrial premiere for this scifi thriller, which sees Matt Damon and Emily Blunt as politician and dancer, fighting to determine their own future directions against a shadowy state. Also featuring the divine Terrence Stamp, in a character role that leaves us wondering just who is on which side, and whether this is fantasy or scary reality. Its followed at 11pm by horror flick The Hole (2009).

Sunday makes up for saturday with a good selection of family fantasy fare. ITV2 has a run starting at 2.30pm with Richard E. Grant in The Little Vampire (2000), Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004 – the live action version starring Sarah-Michelle Geller) at 4.25pm, and director Ang Lee’s The Hulk (2003) at 6.15pm.

These all wrap up in time for alien invasions in Skyline (2010) on Film4 at 9pm. Although my pick of the day goes to ITV at 10.20pm, and the terrestrial premiere of Senna (2010). Whilst not SF/F this documentary contains technical detail, new (to UK eyes) footage and contributions from Prosr, Stewart, Williams and Dennis; as it looks into the on track achievements of Aryton Senna and his untimely death in the 1994 San Marino GP.

In Preparation for summer 2013 Film Release.

Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble” production on the highly anticipated film “Iron Man 3,” directed by Shane Black, has commenced production in Wilmington, North Carolina. The production schedule will also include locations in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Miami, Florida and China.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Iron Man 3” returns Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”) as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,”) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (“Iron Man 2”) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Happy Hogan. Set to release in summer 2013, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” marks the second feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

“Iron Man 3” continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka “Iron Man.” Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz.

The creative production team on the film includes two-time Oscar?-winning director of photography John Toll, ASC (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”), production designer Bill Brzeski (“The Hangover,” “Due Date”), editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Peter S. Elliot (“Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), and costume designer Louise Frogley (“Quantum of Solace,” “Contagion”).

Marvel Studios most recently produced the critically acclaimed “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” which set the all-time, domestic 3-day weekend box office record at $207.4 million. The film, which is currently in release, continues to shatter box office records and is The Walt Disney Studios’ highest-grossing global and domestic release of all time and marks the studios’ fifth film to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

In the summer of 2011, Marvel successfully launched two new franchises with “Thor,” starring Chris Hemsworth, and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” starring Chris Evans. Both films opened #1 at the box office and have grossed over $800 million worldwide combined. In 2010 “Iron Man 2,” starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the #1 spot in its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.” “Iron Man,” in which Robert Downey Jr. originally dons the Super Hero’s powerful armor and stars alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008, and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released “The Incredible Hulk,” marking its second number one opener of that summer.
