Kings of War: Vanguard is a Skirmish game from Mantic Games (Who make Deadzone, Kings Of War and The Walking Dead Miniatures Games).
Mantic wanted something that would compliment their existing Kings of War range and also provide a starting point for those looking to start their own Kings of War army. (Like Me).
This is a good thing as not everyone has time or space for a sprawling 2-3 hour game of large format combat. A one hour skirmish game is great, played on a smaller area.
The format is looking to be skilled warriors, along with a few supporting troops, rather than the more typical rank and flank.
Skirmishes are also looking to feed into larger games: “It was also clear how these battles could feed into larger games of Kings of War too. So if you play a game of Vanguard in which the objective is to light beacons to show the way, in Kings of War you’ll be able to deploy your troops in a more advantageous position. Likewise, the scenarios can go the other way too, so you start with a big battle and then play a game of Vanguard in which you loot the corpses. Of course, Vanguard can be played independently of Kings of War and there will be a full campaign mode.” – Rob Burman, Mantic
Kings of War: Vanguard Fluff
Mantica is a world ravaged by war, a constant fight for land and resources, or prestige and power. The borders of countries wax and wane like the phases of the moon. The sound of mighty armies marching to war echoes throughout the land.
But wars can be won before the first arrows have been fired, or sword has smashed against sword. Small warbands of hardened warriors clash in desperate struggles to gain the tactical advantage before the battle lines are drawn. These are the bloody skirmishes before the war, where warriors become legends.
Kings of War: Vanguard will be launching on Kickstater soon.
Vanguard Character Cards
Vanguard will feature character cards that include all the stats you’ll need to play. Each of the heroes, special characters and warriors will come with their own cards, giving players a great reference during the game. When you’re playing a campaign, we’ll also be making a roster sheet, so you can track upgrades/new abilities/xp.
Vanguard Character Cards Key
NAME – if they’re a named character, this will be their name, e.g. Grekle Cacklemaster, or if they’re a standard miniature it’ll be the name of the unit.
RACE/TYPE – first up you can see what Race the model is. The model’s Race is also a keyword that may interact with other rules, e.g. a unit could receive a bonus when attacking a Race they particularly despise. Next, models will be one (or more) of the following Types: Grunt, Warrior, Support, Command, Spellcaster, and Large. Type is important when building a Warband and, once again, the Type is a keyword that may interact with other rules.
POINTS – this is how many points it costs to add the model to your warband.
STATS – this is where you can find all the stats for the model.
This value shows the distance the model can move in inches.
This is the target number the model needs to roll to hit a target when using a Ranged attack, typically as part of a Shoot or Cast action.
This is the target number the model needs to roll to hit an opponent when making a Melee attack.
This is the target number a model needs to roll to avoid taking damage and suffering wounds.
This is the target number for any Nerve tests the model needs to take. This will come into play if the Warband is broken or if something unnerving happens.
This shows the number of wounds the model can suffer before it is removed from play as a casualty. The larger the number, the more resilient (or stupid!) the model is.
The height of a model affects how it interacts with other models and terrain for line of sight and visibility of targets.
5. SPECIAL RULES – here you can see any special rules the model has. Some of these will be similar to those seen in Kings of War, while others will be completely new.
6. POWER DICE – this indicates how many Power Dice the model generates. The Power Dice work a little like the Command Dice in Deadzone and we’ll have a closer look at Power Dice in a future blog.
7. RANGED & MELEE – this shows how many D8s the model rolls during combat. That’s right, we’ll be using D8s for Vanguard, rather than standard D6s. Even better we’ve got exploding D8s during combat to help create some crazy cinematic moments.
8. EQUIPMENT – equipment will play a large part in Vanguard, as warbands uncover and buy new items during a campaign. Some models will come equipped with weapons/items as standard and they’ll be listed here.
9. SPELLS – spellcasters will have their spells listed here. We’ll be expanding the number of spells available, compared to Kings of War. Also, you may notice it says (short) after the spell name. Just like Deadzone, models will be able to perform two short actions or one long action. Some spells will be long actions, while others will be short. What’s more you’ll be able to boost spells to make them more powerful. As spellcasters gain experience in a campaign, they will also get the chance to learn new spells from an advanced spellbook or faction-specific magic.
10. SPECIAL ABILITIES and RULES – if the model has any special abilities they’ll be listed here. Special Abilities use the Power Dice mentioned earlier, so we’ll go into specifics in a future blog.
Kings of War: Vanguard Power Dice
The Dice are as follows red – weakest, white – slightly better and blue –best. These dice come with differing amounts of stars on (up to a maximum of three) to represent the amount of successes rolled.
The Power Dice are an integral part of Vanguard that really help to create those cinematic and exciting moments you expect to see in a skirmish game
A Bit About Vanguard Combat
Combat system relies on D8!
Starting on point 7 of the stat card above.
Once we’d settled on D8s, we deliberated about whether or not the number 8 should ‘explode’ when rolled. Ultimately we decided that the opportunity to go into ‘overdrive’ by rolling 8s fitted nicely with the idea of individuals going all out for victory. It also helped to create those cinematic moments that you’ll end up talking about after games. ‘Remember, that time the goblin took out an Earth Elemental after rolling six 8s?’ It may be extremely unlikely, but all us goblin lovers can dream.
Anyway, going back to the stat card. Firstly you’ll check the range or melee attack stat to see how many D8s you’ll be rolling. Next up, check the ‘Ra’ or ‘Me’ stat for the target number you’ll need to roll. Any successes count as potential hits against your opponent. Finally your opponent rolls the number of dice equal to the potential hits and is trying to equal or exceed the ‘Ar’ statistic. This gives the defending player the opportunity to add some extra dice using any spare Power in order to keep their most valuable units alive!
Rob Burman – Mantic Games
The defending player can also retaliate against the attack – immediately – cool, as you would wouldn’t you.
A few more exclusive pictures from Warlord Games Doctor Who ranges, including the ever popular Special Weapons Dalek.
Wargames company Warlord Games produces the 38mm figures for painters, collectors and for their wargame EXTERMINATE.
The winter range is made up the following troop types, each with just one major TV appearance to date.
Draconians, from the Jon Pertwee serial The Frontier In Space.
Movellans, enemy to the Daleks from the Tom Baker story Destiny of the Daleks. Though have had a minor appearance in the Peter Capaldi story, The Pilot.
The Special Weapon Dalek. Dripping oil, the imperial Dalek with the Steam Punk gun, rivets and visor. Seen in Remembrance of the Daleks and begging for a return this is a classic Dalek variant from the last of the Classic Doctor Who stories.
Release dates are subject to change but the Draconians should be in shops in November 2017. The Movellans should be available from in December 2017 and the Special Weapons Dalek is due out in January 2018.
In a statement on their facebook page Looney Labs confirmed a Doctor Who flavour of their amazingly mad, evolving card game FLUXX
Yes, the rumors are true: Doctor Who Fluxx is coming soon! We signed off on art proofs and sent it to the printer. It will be in stores on November 23 – 54 years after the very first episode of Doctor Who aired on BBC TV! Get ready to treat yourself for the holidays: buy yourself a copy of Doctor Who Fluxx. It’s about time! #doctorwho #doctorwhofluxx #bbc Doctor Who
It was accompanied by a photo of an uncut sheet of cards.
We are dying to get our hands on this so if Looney Labs are reading we can give you an address to send a copy to.
The latest and greatest version of the card game with ever changing rules! Easier than ever with just the four classic card types that fans the world over have come to know and love. It starts out simple: draw one card and play one card – but New Rule cards quickly make things chaotic.
Even the object of the game will often change as you play, as players swap out one Goal card for another. Can you achieve World Peace before someone changes the goal to Bread and Chocolate?
Fluxx Doctor Who Licence.
Doctor Who is not the first licenced version of Fluxx, there are versions of this card game tied into The Regular Show, Monty Python, Adventure Time, Batman and Firefly. As well as generic varieties, like Star Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx and Cthulhu Fluxx.
Warlord Games really hit a home run with their Doctor Who Into The Vortex miniatures / skirmish game when they released it at Salute 2017.
The Warlord stand and the Exterminate core set for the game was my first point of call and first purchase of the day.
In the Exterminate! miniatures game your Cyberman and Dalek forces can recruit neutral factions, improving their chances of success and adding even more variety to your games.
These highly detailed plastic Cybermen and Dalek miniatures are ‘push-fit’ allowing them to be easily built without glue.
As well as this core set with plastic miniatures Warlord Games have an ongoing release of metal miniatures for use in the game, or for collectors / painters. Previous releases have go included Judoon, Zygons, various Doctors and Companions and a medley of monsters.
Here’s a sneak peek of two figures from the forthcoming Voyage of the Damned episode set. Astrid Peth as played by Kylie Minogue and David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.
The other three figures from this set will be revealed shortly.
Again Warlord have captured the essence of the characters in 38mm*. With the moulded named bases these are ideal for the collector in addition to the gamer. I suspect that the gamer will be mounting these on 30mm bases for the sake of the game.
I just wish I could paint as well as the person who prepared these minis for these images.
August 2017 Warlord Doctor Who Releases
Ogrons: often used by the Daleks to do their dirty jobs
Hailing from the outer fringes of the Mutter’s Spiral, Ogrons are tall, ape-like humanoids of limited intelligence. Due to their great strength and mindless obedience, they are typically used by other species as mercenaries.
The most common employer of Ogrons were the Daleks. In Day of the Daleks, they used Ogrons to control the human population after their 22nd-century invasion of Earth.
An ordinary Viking girl killed after a battle with the alien Mire, Ashildr was resurrected by the Doctor using a Mire repair kit which was able to fix her physiology.
Now with a potentially infinite lifespan, she chose aliases such as Lady Sherade, Ash, El Dir, Alys and the Knightmare, having forgotten her original identity over the centuries.
*correction 24/8/2017 Warlord have let me know that the miniatures are 38mm scale rather than the wargame standard of 28mm, allowing for greater detail and for the figures to be more in proportion than their 28mm counterparts.
Modiphius have just announce the release of Space 1889: Venus, a major new source book for the Space 1889 RPG, steampunk Victorian roleplaying in the worlds created by Jules Verne, HG Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle.
Available as a 178 page printed black and white book or as PDF, this marks the first of a new wave of releases for the Space 1889 RPG collection, following the recent reprint of the core book.
From before the beginnings of history, mankind had spun tales and wondered about that bright point of light named for the Roman goddess of love: Venus, the enigmatic, ever-shifting star of evening and of morning. Yet when the first pioneers started their journey into the ether, they found the Morning Star to be a deadly Garden of Eden
With this source book you can now plunge into the “green hell”! Try your luck as a soldier-of-fortune in the pioneer settlements, or as a scientist, exploring the wonders of a new world. As a colonist you can create a new home far away from Mother Earth. Or you can choose to play a Venusian warrior defending his homeland against the cold, emotionless invaders from beyond space. It’s up to you!
This source book tells you everything you need to know about the settlements of the four nations represented on Venus – Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Russia – as well as some minor powers and stakeholders:
Also included is an extensive chapter on the “Ha”, as the Venusians call themselves, concerning the culture, the biology, and the young civilization of the alien Lizard-men that allows you to portray a Venusian authentically during play.
You will also find extensive material on the unique flora and fauna of the Morning Star – not only new monsters to trouble your player characters, but also the innumerable exotic biological treasures flourishing on Venus.
Inside is new equipment, sample characters and tips and advice on how to play adventures on Venus, as well as a detailed “chemistry set” with exciting new rules for inventions. These will allow your player characters to exploit the natural resources of Venus and develop new drugs, chemicals, and all kinds of bizarre and wondrous substances.
Last but not least, we will also unveil many a secret that still lies hidden beneath the misty shrouds of the Green Planet.

As a miniatures game, Star Wars: Legion invites you to enter the ground battles of the Galactic Civil War as the commander of a unique army filled with troopers, powerful vehicles, and iconic characters. Producers of the amazing The Walking Dead: All Out War Skirmish Game, Mantic Games have revealed details of the Wave 3 Character booster packs.
The Walking Dead: All Out War is a miniatures game of fast-paced, head-to-head skirmish game set in the iconic world of The Walking Dead comic books.
You can buy The Walking Dead Game from your FLGS or online retailers like Element Games or Amazon.
The Walking Dead:Safety Behind Bars!
In this expansion, Rick and the other Atlanta survivors travel from Hershel’s Farm to the Meriwether County Correctional Facility.
For the first time in The Walking Dead, you’ve now got to fight the Walkers in the claustrophobic confines of a map with an interior! Though many players have been using buildings to date.
Armored Walkers are introduced. These are prison guards in riot gear turned, so they are extra tough.
The Safety Behind Bars expansion contains four new survivors, Dexter, Axel, Andrew and Thomas this coupled with new equipment cards (Tear Gas Grenade, Riot Helmet, Riot Shield, Riot Gear, Riot Baton) make this the toughest expansion yet.
Then there are the Wave 3 character boosters.
Maggie, Prison Defender Booster
The Maggie, Prison Defender Booster comes with models for her and her sisters, Susie & Rachel, and an extra walker.
Maggie has grown and this is shown in her new stats. Her previous card’s ability Survival Instinct, which allowed her to choose the preferred of two panic dice, has been upgraded to Faithful Unto Death. She will now never panic as long as Glenn is alive and on the board. With Steadying Influence, Maggie is also able to control the threat level, rolling 1 White Dice when making a Hold Your Nerve action, reducing it by that much. Both of these combined can help your groups of survivors keep their cool in those tense late-game turns.
Her melee attacks have an added red dice, bringing her up to two, while her shooting has been upgraded from a red dice to a white dice. While her health has also gone up to five and all of these upgrades have only cost 6pts more than her previous incarnation.
Glenn, Prison Defender Booster
Clearing out the prison is a dangerous job, so Glenn is equipped to deal with the Walkers in his Riot Gear! However, he’s not the only one with a little bit of extra protection, and the Walker is also protected by armour also.
Alongside Glenn, the booster also includes Wes, one of The Governor’s henchmen from Woodbury. Although on paper Wes appears to be a little useless, the Adrenaline Junkie ability could make him useful in the later stages of the game… if he manages to survive that is!
Game is produced by Mantic Games – You can find them online HERE.
Resident Evil 2 Board game is going to be live on Kickstarter soon.
Steamforged Games is thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership with Capcom to bring the iconic Resident Evil™ 2 video game to the board gamers of the world. Building on the success of previous titles including “Guild Ball” and “Dark Souls: The Board Game”, Steamforged Games will be launching this latest game, “Resident Evil™ 2: The Board Game” via Kickstarter in late Autumn 2017.
Steamforged Games just bought out Dark Souls after their record breaking kickstarter, but are possibly better known for their fantasy football game Guild Ball.
At Scifind.com we are really looking forward to this release BUT we are slightly wary that it might be very similar to CMON’s Zombicide games.
I am sure though that Steamforged can do Resident Evil justice in miniature form and just hope that images of the minis start coming through soon.
There will be updates and IMAGES of miniatures coming soon. Follow @scifind on twitter or facebook for details.

Ok. So these are early renders but they look to be in a good clear cut style, with enough detail to make interesting characters, but still be a single piece plastic mini. Cannot wait to get my hands on the final minis.
Images dropped on the Warhammer Community page yesterday.
Necromunda Is Back!
It’s been more than a decade since we last visited the Necromunda Underhive, but very soon you’ll be able to battle it out in the depths of Hive Primus.
Necromunda is a tabletop skirmish game that was first produced by Games Workshop back in 1995. It was a huge hit, but phased out a while ago.
The Necromunda Underhive is a big place, and the gangs that inhabit it are as diverse as the alien races that inhabit the 41st Millennium. Games Workshop are launching Necromunda with two classics gangs.
Between intense skirmish battles, your gang will grow from a pack of battle-hungry Juves to a feared and respected syndicate of hardened veterans. To get there, however, you’ll have to battle against your fellow players, each with a gang of their own.
The Underhive is a big place, and the gangs that inhabit it are as diverse as the alien races that inhabit the 41st Millennium. Games Workshop are launching Necromunda with two classics.
Gangs from House Escher are fast, deadly, and cruel. While lightly armoured, these cunning warrior women hold their own in melee combat, while at range, they are notorious for their use of armour-melting plasma weaponry.
Warhammer 40K Minitures and Necromunda items can be bought from / preordered at ELEMENT GAMES
A brief announcement was made on the Warhammer Community Website today:
Warhammer 40K Role Play – Wrath and Glory
A new Warhammer 40,000 roleplaying game is coming – soon, you’ll be able to dive into the 41st Millennium in Wrath & Glory. Tabletop roleplaying is a very different experience from wargaming – rather than commanding your forces from above, you’ll be able to inhabit characters of your own design in imaginative collaborative storytelling.
Wrath & Glory is currently in development at Ulisses North America, an experienced designer and publisher of several popular roleplaying games. We can’t reveal anything more at this point, but watch this space for updates and news, and get ready for your own adventures in the 41st Millennium.
That is all – you can read it here – but no release date, no details.
