Big Finish to release Dan Dare Audios

Big Finish Productions and B7 Media team up to bring a classic Sci-Fi character to audio life: Dan Dare!
Big Finish Productions and B7 Media team up to bring a classic Sci-Fi character to audio life: Dan Dare!

This December sees the arrival of Dan Dare at Big Finish, courtesy of a new audio production from B7 Media starring Ed Stoppard as Dan Dare, Geoff McGivern as Digby, Heida Reed as Professor Peabody, and Raad Rawi as the Mekon.

As Big Finish Managing Director Jason Haigh-Ellery explains:
“My first introduction to Dan Dare was at the age of nine through the pages of the legendary comic 2000AD . He was the pilot of the future and artist Bellardinelli brought to life a whole new world that I was previously unaware of. Dan Dare quickly became one of my favourite comic strips and I missed the character terribly when his adventures came in an end after two years of fighting the Mekon and the Star Slayers. Now I have the chance to be a kid again — as B7 Media and Big Finish Productions brings to life one of the UK greatest comic book heroes, but this time as full cast audio productions. I can’t wait!”

Big Finish Executive Producer Nicholas Briggs — who also has a role in the stories – adds:

“We’re delighted to be releasing Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future on the Big Finish site. I’ve been a massive fan of Dan Dare for years. The way B7 have reinvented it is spot on. They’ve lovingly nurtured the spirit of the original to create something new and exciting that still manages to stay thoroughly faithful to all the beauty of the original. I would have loved to have played the Mekon, so, rather fittingly, I got to play an alien who really wanted to be the Mekon!”

B7 Media Producer and Director Andrew Mark Sewell observes:

“Ever since my father first introduced me to Dan Dare I’ve been captivated by his space adventures – so brilliantly realised by the creative genius that was Frank Hampson . It also ignited my fascination with mankind’s quest to journey beyond our blue planet and explore strange new alien worlds.
With the world of film and television drama now seemingly dominated by American comic book heroes, Dan Dare has always stood out as the definitive ‘British’ comic book space hero — a bright light of optimism that captured the hearts and imagination of a generation.
The opportunity to realise Dan Dare for audio, and to partner once more with Big Finish, was an opportunity too great to turn down. Audio is unquestionably the perfect home to deliver truly epic Dan Dare audio adventures that are the embodiment its comic book inspiration.”

Torchwood / Doctor Who’s Captain Jack has own Series.

John Barrowman / Lives of Captain Jack

John Barrowman / Lives of Captain Jack
John Barrowman / Lives of Captain Jack
John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow) returns to the Doctor Who universe as Captain Jack Harkness in The Lives of Captain Jack, a set of four full cast audio adventures from Big Finish, made under licence from BBC Worldwide.

The four adventures in this full cast series from Big Finish provide some of the answers. Starring John Barrowman, and guest starring Russell Tovey (Grabbers), Camille Coduri (Doctor Who, Him & Her), Alexander Vlahos (Merlin, Versailles, The Confessions of Dorian Gray), Sarah Douglas (Superman I, Superman II, Space 1999, V, Strippers vs Werewolves)….

==SciFind rant==
What Big Finish, seriously. Your press release cited Sarah Douglas being associated with Strippers vs Werewolves? Now I love Sarah Douglas in everything I have seen here in, and I actually really rate SvW but it is not something I would list her as being in on a press release. I would probably have just used Superman II and possibly V.
On the subject of V when is Big Finish going to look at licencing audios in the V universe? Would love to hear what was going on the the UK during the 1980s visits.
==rant over==

Scott Haran (Wizards vs Aliens), Aaron Neil (Class) and Katy Manning (Doctor Who) the four adventures see Captain Jack in different times and on different planets, doing battle with a variety of strange and horrible enemies, from Mother Nothing to the Council Of Three.

“I find it really easy to slip into Captain Jack,” laughs John Barrowman. “There’s a bit of Jack in John and vice versa. What’s great about these stories is that they’re the kind of episode we didn’t have time for on TV – exploring aspects of Jack that you’ve never seen before in a timey-wimey way. And getting to work with Camille was amazing. If you’re a fan of Captain Jack, or Torchwood or Doctor Who, then I say get them.”

Released in June 2017, The Lives of Captain Jack is written by Guy Adams and James Goss.
The stories include:
THE YEAR AFTER I DIED: Set in the year 200,101, on an Earth ravaged by the Daleks, we see Jack struggling to save humanity from its oldest enemy.
WEDNESDAYS FOR BEGINNERS: Jack and Jackie Tyler (Camille Coduri) must unite to rescue the Powell Estate from a force whose name Jackie can never say.
ONE ENCHANTED EVENING: Captain Jack and Alonso Frame (Russell Tovey) have only just met. But why did the Doctor want them to be together?
MONTH 25: He’s the young star of the Time Agency, and his whole life is about to fall apart. But that’s not going to stop him winning.

Doctor Who: The War Doctor Returns!

The War Doctor Cover
The War Doctor Cover

The War Doctor was introduced for Doctor Who’s Fiftieth Anniversary, and played a key part in the record-breaking television special The Day of the Doctor, alongside David Tennant and Matt Smith’s Doctors.

He is the secret incarnation of the Time Lord — but he has shunned the title ‘Doctor’ in order to fight in the Time War against the Daleks. “I have been a huge fan of John since first seeing him in the repeats of I, Claudius in the 1980s and in his Oscar-nominated role as the eponymous The Elephant Man,’ says Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. ‘Watching his performance in The Day of the Doctor I did find myself fantasising that some far off day we might have the chance to work with him on the audio adventures of Doctor Who and now two short years later it’s happened! John wove a fantastic character together from a great script by Steven Moffat. Now we have the chance to get to know that character more and hear John stretch in the role. We’re all in for a hell of a ride as the War Doctor engages in battle. But who are the greater threat — the Daleks or the Time Lords?”

The audio adventures of The War Doctor will be told over four box sets, each containing three linked hour-long episodes. The first box set is entitled Only The Monstrous, and is written and directed by Nicholas Briggs, whose many successes for Big Finish include the BBC Audio Award-winning masterpiece Doctor Who: Dark Eyes.

“The story of the Doctor who refuses to call himself the Doctor in order to do the unthinkable upon the ultimate battlefield — all of space and time — was irresistible to me,” says Nicholas. “Such a deeply disturbing and engaging character created by the formidable talents of writer Steven Moffat and actor John Hurt. It’s such a privilege to be working on this.”

The cast of The War Doctor also includes Jacqueline Pearce, who plays Time Lord Cardinal Ollistra — an arch manipulator who is waging the Time War against the Daleks. Jacqueline’s work includes The Avengers, Callan, Doctor Who: Death Comes to Time, Moondial and Russell T Davies’ Dark Season, and she is known to many science fiction fans for her role as Servalan in the cult classic Blake’s 7. Only The Monstrous will be released in December 2015, and will be followed in February 2016 the second volume, Infernal Devices, which is written by John Dorney, Phil Mulryne and Matt Fitton.

Volumes Three and Four are currently in pre-production. “What an utter privilege it is to work with such an iconic actor, playing such a brilliantly devised role,” says producer David Richardson. “This is Doctor Who at its darkest — the era in which our hero casts aside his core values in order to try and save the galaxy in its most terrible hour. We promise bold and brilliant story-telling with gripping character drama, and epic and cinematic audio productions.” In addition to The War Doctor, November 2017 also sees a prequel box set to the saga Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor — The Time War, which will follow the early stages of the Time War from the Eighth Doctor’s perspective. Paul McGann stars, alongside characters first introduced in the War Doctor box sets.

Torchwood Returns in New Six Part Series

Torchwood was the breakout series from Doctor Who that firmly introduced swearing, sex and bloody violence into the Doctor Who universe.

Created by then Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies TORCHWOOD originally ran from 2006 to 2011 over 4 series.

Torchwood: The Conspiracy will start September 2015!

TORCHWOOD RETURNS ON AUDIO
SIX NEW STORIES FROM BIG FINISH PRODUCTIONS?

Big Finish Productions is delighted to announce a new series of Torchwood audio productions, in a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide. The six stories will be performed by members of the television cast, and the range will be launched in September with the return of John Barrowman as the irrepressible Captain Jack Harkness.

Conceived as a spin-off from Doctor Who, Torchwood was created by Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, Cucumber, Banana, Queer as Folk) and made its debut on television in
2006. The top secret organisation Torchwood saved Cardiff (and often the world) from alien menaces and terrible forces, trying to keep the city safe from the inter-dimensional rift that ran through it. In charge of Torchwood was Captain Jack, a man who has been called: “A companion to the Doctor, a rogue Time Agent, an immortal, a dangerous con-man, and very good at parties.” Captain Jack can’t be exterminated or trusted, and there’s just no stopping him.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellyn.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it’s finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish.”

“What’s great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive,” says producer James Goss. “Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it’s one of the few UK series to translate to America. It’s already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s

just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.”

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: “It’s fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can’t wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies has shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with
Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”??

Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later. Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five installments following monthly from January 2016. For many more details, watch this space over the coming months.

Strangeness in Space Is Like A Strange Dream I Once Had

strangeA dream that 1980s Saturday morning TV comedians Trevor and Simon teamed up with Ace from Doctor Who and made a Scifi Comedy.

Well I wish it was my dream, but this new project between the pant swinging duo that don’t do duvets (real names Trevor Neal and Simon Hickson), the ever gorgeous Sophie Aldred and the amazingly talented Clare Eden (producer of crowd funded Minister Of Chance, Doctor Who spin off audio).

Even the logo and associated comic book artwork is pure brilliance created by Lee Sullivan (top comic book artist).

Today they announced the fact Rufus Hound (various comedy panel shows) and Doon Mackichan (great actress) are to be involved the dream team got stronger.

Trev, Simon and Sophie are unwittingly rocketed into the extraordinary, surreal world of space! They’re racing into the future with a foot in the past (the nostalgic 1980s to be precise). Along the way, fuelled by a diet of indigestible powdered space food, they will encounter a whole host of unusual space dwellers and aliens, all played by an exciting parade of cult actors and celebrities, in as many episodes as we can fund through this campaign with your help!

They’ll bump into the flocking Featherheads, or encounter the hairy scary Rhinocerbikers; shake hands with the sinister Dr Scarifium or be shook up by a Space Ghost!

Currently the project is over the 2/3 mark of its ambitious £15,000 crowdfunding target. Check it out over on Kickstarter or on the project’s official page http://strangenessinspace.com/

The Prisoner Returns Thanks To Big Finish!

The Prisoner Due 2016 from Big Finish
The Prisoner Due 2016 from Big Finish
The Prisoner returns on audio, produced by the award-winning Big Finish Productions Ltd.
Big Finish is proud to announce that it has entered into a licence agreement with ITV Studios Global Entertainment to produce a series of full-cast audio dramas based on the world renowned, cult classic 1967 TV series, The Prisoner — bursting with state-of-the-art sound design and a brand new dramatic score.

January 16th 1967. A secret agent suddenly resigns from MI6, then wakes to find himself imprisoned in ‘The Village’ — a bizarre community with a cheery veneer, but an underbelly of threat and mystery. Re-branded as Number Six, our agent must enter into a battle of wits with the sinister Number Two, whose sworn aim is to discover why Number Six resigned. But Number Six refuses to divulge his secrets and must fight off increasingly outlandish and deadly attempts to break him, as he fights to escape and find out…

‘Who is Number One?’.

Big Finish Productions are perhaps best known for their Doctor Who audio drama series (released on CD, download and broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra), which has been running for over fifteen years. Other acclaimed audio drama series from Big Finish include The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes, Dark Shadows, The Omega Factor and Survivors.
The new audio series of The Prisoner is to be written and directed by Big Finish’s co-executive producer, Nicholas Briggs. Nick has been working with the company since the very beginning (as an actor, writer, sound designer, composer, director and producer). He is also known for his voice work on the Doctor Who TV series as the voice of the Daleks and other monsters.
Recently, he wrote and directed the Doctor Who story Dark Eyes, which won the BBC Audio Drama Award for best online drama.

The new audio version of The Prisoner will be very much based on the original, which starred Patrick McGoohan. ‘It won’t simply be a slavish retelling of all the original episodes,’ explains Nick.
‘But aficionados of the original series will certainly recognise much of what they loved about it. A lot of the familiar iconography will be there, but my aim is to push the boundaries, all the while pursuing McGoohan’s stated agenda of the fight against rampant progress and dehumanisation.’

No casting decisions have yet been made. ‘For Number Six, we’re looking for someone who can portray that vital determination and anger, creating a lethal package of dynamite charisma’ says
Nick. ‘They need to be compelling and powerful as well as having great enthusiasm for the series.’
The initial release of a lavish, collectors’ edition box set of five CDs (four hour-long episodes and a behind-the-scenes documentary, with full-colour, souvenir booklet) is set for January 2016, with other box sets to follow. You can pre-order it here

Chase Masterson Back In Big Finish’s Vienna

Chase Masterson is VIENNA (Again)
Chase Masterson is VIENNA (Again)

Big Finish Productions is pleased to announce Chase Masterson’s return as interplanetary hit-woman Vienna Salvatori in three brand new audio adventures. Now available to pre-order, Vienna: Series Two will be released in February 2015.

Smart and sassy bounty hunter Vienna Salvatori is once again played by Chase Masterson, best known for her role as Leeta in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. First introduced in the full cast Doctor Who audio drama, The Shadow Heart, Vienna is a one-woman justice machine who never lets her target out of her sights.

However, in Series Two Vienna finds herself somewhere she’s never been before – on the right side of the law.

“This is a new start for Vienna,” says series producer Cavan Scott. “After years of wandering the galaxy with only her ship’s computer for company, she’s returned to Earth. She has a home, she has a job and, most surprisingly, she has a partner.”

That partner is jaded cop Jexie Reagan, played by Samantha Béart (Doctor Who 1963: The Space Race, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Quintessential Phase).

“Lieutenant Reagan is a law-enforcer haunted by the ghosts of her past,” says Cavan. “Together, Vienna and Jexie make a formidable duo. Vienna is a woman who usually kills someone just for learning her name. She’s not used to having anyone else around, while Jexie Reagan isn’t about to be anyone’s sidekick.”

Of course, Vienna being Vienna, the bodies soon start piling up as Cavan explains: “Over the course of the three adventures Vienna faces psychotic shape-changers, homicidal nurses and strange masked killers,” Cavan explains. ” And that’s just for starters.

“While we were recording the first episode of the new season, word came through that we could start work on Series Three! The universe hasn’t seen the last of Salvatori and Reagan!”

Series two of Vienna is made up of three stories: Tabula Rasa by James Goss, Underworld by Cavan Scott and The Vienna Experience by Jonathan Morris.

Original music and sound design is by Hollywood composer Joseph Kraemer (Jack Reacher, The Way of the Gun).

Vienna Series Two is available to pre-order as a triple-CD set for £25 and digital download for £20. For further details visit: http://www.bigfinish.com/ranges/released/vienna
