Realistically speaking, there was no way that this latest big budget version of Jules Verne’s classic adventure romp was ever going to be a huge hit in America. I mean, this is the twenty-first century and the multiplex crowd want superheroes, cool FX-heavy blockbuster extravanganas, they went glamourous streetwise cool dudes and they want, it seems, fast cars and even faster women. What they do not want is quaint tales about Victorian scientists with a penchant for Heath Robinson-style whizzbang inventions circumnavigating the globe in order to win a bet with a man in a big hat. They don’t, it appears, event want Jackie Chan – which is, at least, something of a relief.
