Starship Troopers 3: Marauder DVD Review

I loved Starship Troopers, the original film. The sequel was obviously a very low budget cash in on the name of Starship Troopers. But this third film is more of a return to the original.

Drafting back Casper Van Dien who played Johnny Rico in the original movie is just one of the steps the producers have taken to reprise the feel of the first film.

The use of the ‘funny’ propaganda film, the gory side of things and the full frontal nudity also are key elements taken directly from the first movie.

But what went wrong as this is simply the worst film I have seen in a very long while (and I regularly watch movies on the Zone Horror TV channel on Sky). There is a list of things that went wrong. Including the limited budget, poor script, bad special effects that were hoped to match the original (at least in Starship Troopers 2 they knew their limitations) obsession with making the movie a post 9/11 film, bad direction, some ham fisted religious iconography. Simply I had had enough of this after the first few minutes. The propaganda films were far too frequent in this outing. In the original they were punchy and relevant. Here they are crow barred in place and seem to run for too long.

Watch the original, check out the sequel (as it is not all bad for what it is) but I would avoid this film. The only way I would buy this film is packaged with the originals, and then the SST3 disc would not make it out of the box.

What about the special features, to be frank I never got that far, I was completely put off.
